Male Hormone Deficiency
Fatigue and Slowed Thinking

Early signs of low testosterone can be detected and addressed before the condition worsens.

Did you know that one of the first indicators of declining testosterone levels is slower thinking and delayed decision-making? Other symptoms include forgetfulness, fatigue, lack of energy, irritability, abdominal weight gain, and fat accumulation in various parts of the body.

Even with resistance training, you may find that muscle growth is minimal or slower than others. Some individuals may also experience insomnia, reduced sex drive, incomplete erections, low self-confidence, and a decreased interest in competition.

The symptoms mentioned above are early warning signs that men may be beginning to experience male hormone deficiency. If left untreated over time, this condition can lead to various health issues such as erectile dysfunction (ED), insulin resistance, osteoporosis, and even premature cardiovascular disease.

Male hormone deficiency can begin as early as the early 30s, depending on several factors — including obesity, abdominal obesity (metabolic syndrome), chronic stress, lack of physical activity, and genetic predisposition.

How to Test Hormone Levels

There are mainly two methods to test hormone levels:

  1. Blood test
  2. Saliva test

Blood testing is more commonly used. It typically takes about 1–2 days to get the results. You can consult and have blood tests done at general anti-aging health clinics or private hospitals. Hormone testing is not limited only to male menopause clinics. For example, those who regularly engage in resistance or weight training, as well as bodybuilders, often have their hormone levels checked periodically through blood tests.

Important notes before testing male hormone levels:
The test should be done in the morning before 11:00 AM for accurate results. On the day of the test, your body should be in a fairly normal state without any illness.

What Hormone Levels Are Considered Appropriate?

Male hormone deficiency is known by several names, such as Testosterone Deficiency Syndrome, Andropause, and Androgen Deficiency in Adult Men. The definition of male hormone deficiency varies depending on the guidelines set by medical associations in different countries. The diagnostic criteria for male hormone deficiency also vary, with thresholds such as Total Testosterone levels below 230 ng/dL, 300 ng/dL, or 350 ng/dL, among others.

Generally, the recommended morning testosterone level should be in the range of 500–700 ng/mL. If your measured level falls below this range, men are advised to start adjusting their lifestyle to naturally increase testosterone (which can be done without medication). However, if your testosterone level is below 350 ng/mL, you should consult a doctor for evaluation of possible male hormone deficiency.

Ways to Increase Male Hormone Levels

1. Hormone Therapy:
There are various forms of testosterone or other hormone treatments to boost testosterone levels. It is recommended to use only bioidentical hormones—those that mimic natural hormones. The methods include intramuscular injections into the hip (available in weekly or quarterly doses, depending on blood test results and the doctor’s discretion) and topical hormone creams for external application.

(Hormone therapy should always be started under a doctor’s supervision. Besides hormone level blood tests, other blood tests and physical examinations are also necessary.)

2. Resistance/Weight Training:
This type of exercise is highly effective in increasing testosterone levels. Studies show that individuals who regularly perform resistance training have higher testosterone levels compared to those who do not exercise. (Details about resistance training and its effects on male hormones will be discussed next time.)

3. Diet:

✔️ Increase intake of good quality protein—about 1.2 to 2 grams per kilogram of body weight, depending on daily activity levels.

✔️ Increase consumption of healthy fats such as coconut oil, fermented dairy products like yogurt and cheese, fish oil, flax seeds, chia seeds, almonds, walnuts, avocado, and others.

✔️ Take vitamins, minerals, and supplements including Vitamin C, Vitamin K, Vitamin B3, Vitamin D, Zinc, Selenium, and Resveratrol. (Details about vitamins and supplements will be discussed next time.)

✔️ Reduce caffeine-containing beverages such as tea, coffee, and cocoa.

✔️ Reduce alcohol consumption.

4. Quit smoking

5. Avoid wearing tight underwear
It is recommended to wear boxers instead, as the testes function better in a warmer, less restrictive environment.

6. Engage in exciting activities

Some activities can stimulate testosterone production, such as watching action movies, socializing, interacting with people of different age groups, and other similar activities.

If you experience any of the symptoms mentioned earlier that suggest male hormone deficiency, you should consult a doctor to check your hormone levels. Early treatment can quickly alleviate these symptoms. Most individuals who undergo hormone adjustment feel younger, have a brighter complexion, more energy, increased vitality, sharper mind, better memory, and improved work performance.

Now that you know this, don’t forget to schedule an appointment to have your testosterone levels checked! If you’re unsure where to consult, you can make an appointment at Mousai Wellness Center.
